A lot in the newspapers at the moment about the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough coming up on the 15th.
I read Hillsborough survivor Adrian Tempany's piece a couple of weeks ago in the Observer magazine. It was incredibly moving. In today's Observer he's written about his return to Anfield, and to football, last Wednesday for the Champions League tie against Chelsea. Shame the Reds lost 3-1.
His article contains a wonderful paragraph that does as much to sum up the appeal of Liverpool, and what makes them a special team:
"And here it is. This is Anfield. The place where my love affair with the game began. For a kid who grew up in the south east, in a new town not much older than me, it was the raw working-class spit and ale spirit on the Kop that hooked me into the game. To be part of the 23,000 people on that terrace, moving around like a cornfield in the breeze, laughing and shouting and singing the most beautiful songs in football, was an education money couldn't buy."
The rest of the article is here.
